Patapon Shield TF
The afternoon sun filtered through the blinds as Kai tapped frantically at the buttons of his handheld console. His room was a mess of discarded snack wrappers and school books, but he paid them no mind. All that mattered was the mission at hand—defeating the Dodonga, a fearsome dragon-like creature in the game Patapon.
“Pata-pata-pata-pon!” Kai chanted under his breath, matching the rhythm that commanded his tiny one-eyed warriors on screen. The black silhouettes of his Patapon army marched forward in perfect sync, spears and shields at the ready.
The Dodonga appeared on screen, its massive jaws opening to unleash a devastating fire attack. This was where Kai had failed three times already, but this time would be different. He had upgraded his Tatepons—shield-bearing warriors—and was confident in his strategy.
“Pon-pon-pata-pon!” he commanded, ordering his troops to attack. But as he pressed the buttons, his thumb slipped, breaking the rhythm. “No!” he shouted as the screen displayed the dreaded “FEVER BROKEN” message.
Without the fever mode’s enhanced power, his Patapons were vulnerable. The Dodonga’s tail swept across the screen, decimating his front line. One by one, his beloved warriors fell, their tiny eyes closing as they returned to the earth.
“MISSION FAILED” flashed across the screen in bold red letters.
“Not again!” Kai threw himself back on his bed, the console dropping beside him. “I had the perfect setup! How am I ever going to beat this level?”
As if in response, the handheld console began to glow with an eerie pulsing light. Kai sat up, eyes wide as the light intensified, spilling out from the screen and spreading across his bed.
“What the—” was all he managed before the light engulfed him completely.
The sensation began in his fingertips—a tingling, almost electrical feeling that rapidly spread up his arms. Kai tried to scream, but no sound escaped his lips as the tingling transformed into a sensation of pressure, as if he were being compressed from all sides.
“Help!” he tried to shout, but his voice seemed to fold inward, becoming smaller and smaller until it disappeared entirely.
The pressure intensified, and Kai felt his body begin to change. His skin hardened, the transformation starting at his extremities and working its way inward. His fingers fused together, flattening and widening simultaneously. The hardening sensation crawled up his arms, turning his soft skin into something rigid and unyielding.
“What’s happening to me?” His thoughts raced, but his mouth could no longer form words. The transformation accelerated, his arms flattening and expanding outward into a broad, curved surface. His chest compressed against this new form, merging with it as if clay being molded by invisible hands.
Kai watched in horror as his legs began to shrink, folding upward and dissolving into the increasingly shield-like form his body was taking. The sensation was not painful—more like an intense pressure combined with numbness, as if each part of him was falling asleep before transforming.
His torso compressed next, the sensation of his internal organs shifting and dissolving making him mentally scream in terror. Yet, as each piece of his humanity disappeared, a strange acceptance began to replace his fear. His consciousness remained intact, but his perception of himself was changing with his form.
The hardening reached his neck, and Kai felt his head being pulled downward, sinking into what had once been his shoulders. His features—eyes, nose, mouth—flattened and stretched across the upper portion of the shield he was becoming. He could still see, but not through eyes—it was more like a general awareness of his surroundings from the front of his shield-self.
His hair transformed last, hardening and reshaping into ornate decorative elements along the top edge of his new form. The transformation completed with a flash of light that seemed to come from within him, and Kai felt a final shift as colors and patterns etched themselves across his surface—red and gold swirls in the traditional Patapon style, with a single large eye-like symbol in the center.
The transformation had left him completely inanimate—a shield, nothing more. He couldn’t move, couldn’t speak, couldn’t even blink. Yet somehow, he was aware. He could see, hear, and think, trapped in this rigid form that was nothing like his human body.
Kai felt exposed, naked in a way he’d never experienced before. Though he had no body in the conventional sense, being reduced to an object—a tool for others to use—created a vulnerability that made him want to curl up and hide. But shields couldn’t curl up. Shields couldn’t hide. Shields could only shield.
The world around him came into focus, and Kai realized he was no longer in his bedroom. Instead, he found himself in a strange, stylized landscape of rolling hills and bizarre trees. The world of Patapon spread out before him—but from a very different perspective than the top-down view he was used to from the game.
“Almighty one! Almighty one!” squeaky voices chanted in unison. “The rhythm has failed! The rhythm has judged!”
Kai would have gasped if he could. Surrounding him were dozens of Patapons—the very warriors he had been commanding. Their single eyes stared at him with what seemed like a mixture of awe and amusement. One Patapon stepped forward—taller than the rest, with a distinctive feathered headdress. Kai recognized him as Hatapon, the flag bearer and leader of the tribe.
“The Almighty has been punished for failing the rhythm,” Hatapon announced, his voice surprisingly solemn for such a small creature. “The ancient prophecy has come to pass. When the Almighty fails the rhythm three times and then a fourth, they shall join us to learn the ways of the beat.”
A Tatepon warrior—one of the shield-bearers—approached cautiously. “But to become a shield? I have never heard of such a transformation in the legends.”
“The Almighty chooses not their form,” Hatapon replied, “but the form that best teaches the lesson they need to learn.”
The Tatepon reached out and lifted Kai, who was startled by the sensation of being handled. Though he had no nerve endings in his shield form, he could still somehow “feel” the contact—a strange pressure without pain or temperature.
“I shall carry the Almighty,” the Tatepon declared, strapping Kai to his arm. “Perhaps through experiencing the rhythm from our side, they will learn to command it better.”
The sensation of being attached to the Tatepon’s arm was bizarre. Kai could feel every movement, every shift in posture. He was completely at the mercy of this small warrior, unable to control his own position or direction.
“Look how shiny the Almighty is now!” another Patapon giggled—a Yumipon archer with a bow almost as tall as himself. “Do you think they can see their reflection in themselves?”
“Be respectful!” Hatapon scolded, but Kai could detect amusement in his voice too. “The Almighty is learning a hard lesson.”
“I bet they’re embarrassed,” a Yaripon spear-carrier chimed in, leaning in to peer at Kai’s shield surface. “Being reduced to equipment after commanding us from the heavens. How the mighty have fallen!”
If Kai could have blushed, he would have. The Yaripon was right—he felt utterly humiliated. He had gone from being their god, their “Almighty,” to being strapped to a Tatepon’s arm. The reversal of roles was as complete as it was mortifying.
“Enough teasing,” Hatapon ordered. “We have a mission to complete. The Dodonga will not defeat itself, and now we must succeed without the Almighty’s commands.”
The Tatepon carrying Kai took up position in the front line as the tribe formed its marching order. Kai found himself facing forward, able to see everything that was about to happen. It was terrifying and exhilarating all at once.
“We still have the sacred drums,” Hatapon reminded them. “We need only four Patapons to play them, and we can create our own rhythm.”
Four Patapons stepped forward, each taking up a position behind a different drum. They began to beat out a familiar pattern:
“Pata-pata-pata-pon!”
To Kai’s astonishment, the tribe began to march forward in perfect unison, including the Tatepon carrying him. He felt every step, every bounce in the warrior’s gait. The rhythm vibrated through his shield form, and something stirred within his consciousness—a recognition of the pattern, but from an entirely new perspective.
As they marched toward the Dodonga’s territory, Kai began to understand something fundamental about the rhythm that he had never grasped as the commander. The beats weren’t just commands; they were the heartbeat of the Patapon world itself. Each drum strike resonated with the essence of the tiny warriors, connecting them to each other and to their environment.
The march continued, and soon they encountered smaller enemies—Karmens and Zigotons. The drum pattern changed:
“Pon-pon-pata-pon!”
The Tatepon raised Kai to block an incoming attack, and for the first time, Kai experienced what it truly meant to be a shield. The impact reverberated through his entire being, but instead of pain, he felt purpose. He was protecting the Tatepon, protecting the tribe. There was power in this role—not the godlike power he had wielded as the Almighty, but something more intimate and immediate.
After defeating the smaller enemies, they finally reached the Dodonga’s lair. The massive dragon-creature emerged from its cave, exactly as Kai remembered from the game screen—but infinitely more terrifying from this perspective.
“Don Don Chaka Chaka!” the drum bearers chanted, and the warriors entered a defensive stance. The Tatepon raised Kai just as the Dodonga unleashed its fire breath. The heat was intense, and Kai feared he might melt or burn. But the shield form he now inhabited was designed for exactly this purpose, and he withstood the flames.
The battle was long and arduous. From his position on the Tatepon’s arm, Kai experienced every attack, every defensive move. He felt the rhythm in a way he never had before—not as command but as communion. The Patapons weren’t just following orders; they were dancing with destiny, their movements an extension of the beat itself.
When the Dodonga finally fell, defeated by the Patapons’ coordinated attacks, a cheer rose from the tiny warriors. The Tatepon who carried Kai raised him high, and the tribe chanted:
“The Almighty has learned! The Almighty has protected! The Almighty understands the rhythm!”
Hatapon approached and placed a tiny hand on Kai’s shield surface. “Now the Almighty must choose. The transformation can be reversed. You can return to the world beyond and command us once again, with new understanding of our ways.”
Kai pondered this offer. Return to his room, to his life, to controlling these creatures from afar? Something had changed within him during the battle. As a shield, he had experienced connection and purpose in a way he never had before. He had been part of something, integral to it, rather than separate and above it.
Being a shield wasn’t so bad. Yes, he couldn’t move on his own or speak, but he could feel the rhythm in its purest form. He could protect others directly, his very existence a barrier between harm and those he cared for. And though he had initially felt exposed and vulnerable in this form, he now felt a strange pride in his new role.
If he could have smiled, he would have. His decision was made.
Hatapon seemed to sense his choice. “The Almighty wishes to remain among us? As a shield?”
The Tatepon holding Kai looked surprised. “But why would the Almighty choose such a fate? To be carried rather than to command?”
Another Patapon, a wise old Mahopon, stepped forward. “Perhaps the Almighty has learned the greatest lesson of all—that to truly understand the rhythm, one must be part of it, not separate from it.”
The tribe fell silent, contemplating this wisdom. Finally, Hatapon nodded. “So be it. The Almighty shall remain as the Sacred Shield of the Tatepon tribe. Let all know that our god loved us so much, they became our protection.”
The Tatepon holding Kai stood taller, suddenly aware of the honor bestowed upon him. “I shall carry the Almighty with pride,” he declared.
“The Sacred Shield will need a proper name,” the Mahopon suggested. “Not just ‘Almighty’ anymore.”
“Kaishield!” a young Patapon called out, and the name was immediately taken up by the others.
“Kaishield! Kaishield! Kaishield!”
As the Patapons chanted his new name, Kai felt a sense of belonging wash over him. Yes, some of the Patapons still looked at him with amusement—the god who became equipment would always carry a certain irony. And yes, occasionally they would tease him, polishing his surface extra vigorously or decorating him with flowers while he slept (though shields didn’t really sleep, Kai discovered—just entered a kind of quiet awareness).
But as the days passed into weeks, and the weeks into months, Kai found himself enjoying his new existence more than he had expected. The rhythm of the Patapon world became his rhythm. The victories of the tribe became his victories. The Tatepon who carried him—who eventually introduced himself as Tate—became his closest friend, even though their communication was entirely one-sided.
And sometimes, in the quiet moments between battles, when the Patapons made camp under the strange stars of their world, Kai would reflect on his transformation. From a frustrated boy failing at a video game to a literal shield in that game’s world—it was absurd, impossible, magical.
Yet here he was, living the rhythm rather than commanding it. Learning its secrets from within rather than imposing them from without.
It wasn’t the life he had expected. It wasn’t even a life most would choose. But for Kai—now Kaishield, the Sacred Shield of the Patapons—it was the perfect beat, the perfect rhythm, the perfect destiny.
And when the drums began their beat each morning—”Pata-pata-pata-pon!”—and he felt himself lifted once more into battle, Kai knew with absolute certainty that he had made the right choice. He was home.
